Story

WHY GET INVOLVED?

Homelessness is a problem often overlooked and misunderstood by the wider community. The OLMC Vinnies Community Sleepout provides our Parish with a glimpse of what it’s like to sleep out for the night and encourages them to learn more about the problem they’re helping to solve. By getting involved with the Sleepout, our Parish and YOU will play an active role in your local community and raise vital funds and awareness of the situation faced by many Australians who do not have secure housing or accommodation.

WHO YOU ARE HELPING

Awareness and fundraising are key ways the Vinnies Community Sleepout helps people experiencing homelessness in your community. In today’s financial climate, homelessness is a growing problem, with more and more people turning to Vinnies for help. Men, women, families and youth are all affected by this issue. With no family or friends to help, it’s easy for someone to fall through the cracks and end up sleeping in their car or on the street. Vinnies first began helping Australians in 1854, and we’ve been active in the community ever since.

Some of the practical help we have been asked to provide:

• Emergency food & Clothing vouchers
• Provision of household goods such as linen, towels and blankets
• Provision of household furniture such as bedding, table and chairs etc.
• Help with the cost of medications, medical assistance, nappies and baby formulas, school clothing and sport uniforms etc.
• Help with the cost of funerals, settling newly arrived refugees, settling survivors of domestic violence, families lost homes due to fire, etc.
• Assisting with payment of utilities such as water, electricity, gas, phones
• Arranging budget financial counselling and referral services to other agencies e.g. for housing etc.
• Providing holiday stays for families in SVDP properties, Christmas hampers and gifts
• Support to families who have lost a loved one, incl. loss of a baby or child. • Support to families living in difficult situations such as abuse, isolation, drug/alcohol, and mental health issues.
• Sometimes being the only “friends/visitors” who call/visit

St Vincent de Paul Society NSW (Vinnies NSW)

The St Vincent de Paul Society in NSW has been helping the community since 1881. Every day, the Society's 16,000 members and volunteers help vulnerable and marginalised people in their local communities by visiting them in their homes, providing assistance and referring them to other services when needed. Last year our local member networks provided around $20 million worth of financial and material assistance to hundreds of thousands of people experiencing disadvantage.
